As Kuldeep and Sonia Pall were cleaning up the kitchen in their Mississauga home, their
10-year-old son Sahil was getting his teeth cleaned and checked in the comfort of his own living room.
Mobile oral hygiene care is a unique service offered by registered dental hygienist Jag Dhamrait.
"Most people have very busy lifestyles and can't always go to a typical dentist setting," said Dhamrait. "This is something totally different. I bring all the regular tools and equipment used in the hygienist office to them – to fit around their
schedules."
Dhamrait created his company, Smiles by Jag , last August and so far has seen over 100 patients at
their homes and even their offices.
"When I started I thought my clients would be mostly the elderly, but many of them are young families and their kids," he
said. "And this way I also get to spend more one-on-one time with the patient, making sure I do a good job."
Dhamrait drums up business primarily through word of mouth.
The Palls, whose friends recommended Dhamrait, have been patients of his for four months.
"It's just as good as going to the dentist’s office, except it's better because it's more personable," said Kuldeep. "It really is
a great concept and I think a lot more people should be doing this."
Sonia said the process is especially convenient for parents who work full-time like they both do.
"It all happens in the comfort of your own home and there's no pressure of waiting times," she said. "And it's great for our
kids because it also gets rid of the stress of the dentist's office (which is an issue with their six-year-old daughter Siena).
This way she's relaxed at home and she still gets her regular check-ups."
If a patient has an issue that needs the attention of a dentist, Dhamrait gives them a referral slip which they can take to
their regular dentist or a dentist that he can refer them to.
Dhamrait charges regular dental hygienist fees, which are covered by work dental plans.
"As well, I deal with the insurance companies, so my patients don't have to," he said.
So what did Sahil think about all of this after his check-up and cleaning?
"It was actually fun and easier than going to a dentist's office," he said. "Here at home I can watch TV and keep my mind
busy while I get my teeth cleaned. It feels good and now my teeth are polished."
